Yemen's government says it repelled a Houthi push as the UN counts the civilian cost

Competing battlefield claims over the Taiz–Aden route; the UN records 15 children among the dead.

Yemen's Saudi-backed government said its forces repelled a Houthi offensive aimed at the supply route linking Taiz province to Aden. The UN human rights chief said civilians are bearing the brunt of renewed fighting, citing a toll that includes 15 children killed and documenting alleged Houthi attacks on displacement sites. The Houthis deny this and accuse Saudi forces of bombardment, which Saudi officials also deny.

What holds up

  • ✓Fighting along the Taiz–Aden corridor is underway, per Reuters.
  • ✓The UN rights office issued its casualty findings, using its own monitoring.

What doesn't yet

  • ?Whether the offensive was 'repelled' is a claim by one combatant.
  • ?Responsibility for attacks on displacement sites is denied by every party named.
  • ?UN verification is constrained by restricted access.

Ask before you share

  • →Who actually holds the route right now, and can that be checked from satellite imagery?
  • →How does the UN verify casualties where it cannot travel freely?
  • →Which narrative is being amplified internationally, and to what end?
