G7 agrees reserve release after Trump threatens diesel export ban

Several outlets report a co-ordinated oil and diesel release, but its scale and effect remain less firmly established.

G7 nations are to release emergency oil and diesel reserves following US pressure and Donald Trump's threat to restrict diesel exports. The Guardian reports a planned release of up to 100 million barrels, while Al Jazeera reports that crude prices eased after the agreement.

What holds up

  • ✓BBC, Al Jazeera and the Guardian agree that a co-ordinated reserve release followed US pressure.
  • ✓Several reports identify Trump's threatened export restrictions as a driver of the agreement.

What doesn't yet

  • ?The 100 million-barrel ceiling appears only in the Guardian item; the summaries do not establish delivery schedules or national contributions.
  • ?An announced release does not establish that supplies have reached markets or that price relief will last.

Ask before you share

  • →How much will actually be released, and when?
  • →Has the US formally withdrawn its export-ban threat?

US hiring slows as unemployment edges higher

BBC and NPR report a weakening labour market ahead of the midterm elections.

US employers added 29,000 jobs in September, according to NPR, which puts unemployment at 4.2%. BBC also reports a sharp hiring slowdown and a slight rise in unemployment. NPR says July and August job gains were revised down by a combined 60,000.

What holds up

  • ✓BBC and NPR agree on weaker hiring and a rise in unemployment.
  • ✓NPR supplies specific monthly figures and revisions, although the underlying statistical release is not included.

What doesn't yet

  • ?The exact figures are available from only one supplied item.
  • ?The summaries do not establish why hiring weakened or whether the slowdown will persist.

UK average diesel price passes £2 a litre, RAC says

BBC reports put the average pump price at a record 200.01p a litre, citing the same motoring body.

The BBC reports that UK diesel prices have exceeded £2 a litre for the first time. A companion item gives an average pump price of 200.01p, according to the RAC. The reporting links rising petrol and diesel pump prices to higher global oil prices.

What holds up

  • ✓Both BBC items report diesel passing the £2 threshold and identify the RAC as the source.
  • ✓The precise figure of 200.01p is consistent with the rounded description of more than £2.

What doesn't yet

  • ?The two reports rely on the same outlet and underlying data source, rather than providing independent measurements.
  • ?The excerpts do not provide the RAC's sampling method, measurement time or regional variation.

Ask before you share

  • →How and when was the national average calculated?
  • →How much do prices vary between locations and retailers?
