Japan’s largest breweries raided over suspected price-fixing

Two outlets report searches at Asahi, Kirin, Suntory and Sapporo, but the allegations remain unproven.

BBC News and the Guardian report that Japanese authorities searched four major breweries over suspected collusion on beverage prices. All four companies confirmed the searches to the BBC. The Guardian says the companies together control more than 90% of Japan’s beer market.

What holds up

  • ✓Both outlets identify the same four companies and report raids over suspected price-fixing.
  • ✓The BBC obtained confirmation of the searches from the companies themselves.

What doesn't yet

  • ?Searches do not establish that a cartel operated; no findings or underlying evidence are supplied.
  • ?The market-share figure and suggestion that consumers overpaid appear only in the Guardian item.

Ask before you share

  • →What evidence has the competition authority disclosed?
  • →Which beverages and pricing periods are under investigation?
