Pope Leo undergoes lung cancer surgery, Vatican says

Several outlets report the Vatican's announcement that a cancerous growth was removed, but the longer-term prognosis remains unclear.

The Vatican said Pope Leo underwent surgery to remove a cancerous growth from his right lung. France 24 reported that the lower lobe was removed during a 90-minute operation on Tuesday and that he woke normally afterwards. DW reported that he was recovering.

What holds up

  • ✓BBC, NPR, France 24 and DW all report surgery for lung cancer, citing the Vatican.
  • ✓BBC and France 24 both report removal of the lower lobe of the right lung.

What doesn't yet

  • ?The coverage largely rests on the same Vatican announcement rather than independent medical evidence.
  • ?A Vatican source told France 24 that tests were continuing to establish whether the cancer had spread; the items do not establish a longer-term prognosis.

Ask before you share

  • →Have further test results or a medical prognosis been released?
  • →Does 'successful surgery' describe the procedure alone, rather than the outcome of cancer treatment?
