Three children and a teacher killed in Oregon school attack

Reports say a teacher fought the teenage attacker before a parent shot him.

BBC News and NPR report that three children and a teacher were killed at an Oregon elementary school. The BBC identifies the school as Silver Rail Elementary in Bend and gives the children's ages as five, eight and 11. BBC News and Al Jazeera report that a teacher fought the attacker and a parent shot him; Al Jazeera says police reported that the attacker died.

What holds up

  • ✓BBC News, NPR and Al Jazeera agree that four people were killed in the school attack, with BBC News and NPR specifying three children and a teacher.
  • ✓BBC News and Al Jazeera both report a teacher's intervention and a parent shooting the attacker.

What doesn't yet

  • ?Much of the account is attributed to police; the summaries provide no underlying records or detailed witness accounts.
  • ?The suspect's exact age and the claim that he targeted a special educational needs classroom appear only in the BBC item.

Ask before you share

  • →What evidence establishes the sequence of the teacher's and parent's interventions?
  • →Have police released further evidence about the suspect's target and connection to the school?
