US military says it helped Gulf states export 1.5 billion barrels of oil

Several outlets report CENTCOM’s figures, but the supplied coverage offers no outside check of the oil volumes or the military’s contribution.

Al Jazeera reports that US Central Command says its forces helped Gulf countries export more than 1.5 billion barrels of oil since June. CENTCOM also says more than 3,000 commercial vessels passed through the Strait of Hormuz with its support over six months. Arab News, Ahram Online and RFE/RL report the same milestones, drawing on the command’s statement rather than separate shipping records.

What holds up

  • ✓The coverage consistently identifies CENTCOM as the source of both milestones. Ahram Online and Arab News quote its statement, while RFE/RL also attributes the figures directly to the command.
  • ✓RFE/RL dates commander Adm. Brad Cooper’s visit to the strait to October 25 and links it to the announcement. This supports the announcement’s context, not the underlying export totals.
  • ✓Several websites carry matching wording found in an AFP dispatch. Those accounts repeat the same statement; they do not represent separate checks of cargo volumes or vessel movements.

What doesn't yet

  • ?No supplied excerpt includes port records, tanker-tracking data or shipping-company confirmation of the totals. CENTCOM is describing its own success, and the excerpts do not explain what counted as military “support.”
  • ?The reporting uses different time windows: Al Jazeera says oil exports occurred “since June,” while the quoted statement says “since summer.” The vessel total covers six months, so the two milestones should not be assumed to cover identical periods.
  • ?CENTCOM’s claim that more than 95% of ships passed safely does not by itself establish its broader assertion that the US and regional partners control the waterway. These snippets and excerpts are not full-article verification.

Ask before you share

  • →Do port, customs or tanker-tracking records substantiate the oil volume and vessel count for clearly defined dates?
  • →What assistance did US forces provide, and how did CENTCOM decide which exports and transits to count?
  • →What counts as a safe passage, and do ship operators or regional authorities confirm the reported safety rate?
